Frequently Asked Questions |
|||
| What is Meditation? | |||
| Meditation is a real happening where the practitioner experiences a state beyond thought. In the true state of meditation we go beyond our worries our false identifications which we acquire from our parents, school and society. We reach a state beyond that day to day mind set and reach an heightened awareness, known as 'thoughtless awareness' in this state we are aware of everything but thinking of nothing. The Sahaja Yoga meditation technique allows this state to be established quickly without exerting the mind through great effort. Sahaj, meaning effortless and spontaneous.
People who meditate regularly, generally, enjoy better health they feel calmer, they develop a healthier outlook on life. When the inner Self is awakened and nourished, our emotional, mental and physical problems can be eased if not solved. |

| What is Yoga? | |||
The word Yoga, over time, became associated more and more with a regime of physical exercises which was said to improve our physical health. The yogis of old who practiced these physical exercises did so, not to gain great health and strenght, but to clear their physical system in order that the Kundalini energy would rise up through the central nervous system and bring about the 'Yoga'. The word Yoga actually comes from Sanskrit, the root word is yuj, meaning "to yoke" or "to unite", in old English 'Yoke' was used to mean connect or bind together. A Yoke was a piece of wood that joined two oxen together. The true Yoga takes place when the individual spirit merges/connects/ unites/binds with the divine spirit that animates the universe. |

| Are there health benefits? | |||
There are naturally derived health benefits in practicing Sahaja Yoga. Clinical research in various hospitals and universities around the world have shown dramatic improvements in asthma patients, children with ADHD/ADD, with epilepsy, migraines, symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and other conditions. People practicing Sahaja Yoga report improvements in a wide range of medical conditions, including those where conventional medicine has limited effect. |
|||
| Does Sahaja Yoga charge money? | |||
| No. Sahaja Yoga is a registered not-for-profit education society and charity, a grass roots organization, it costs nothing for any individual to learn this technique. The aim is to make Sahaja Yoga available to everyone, regardless of economic status. |
|||
| Is there a membership to Sahaja Yoga? Hidden fees? | |||
| No. There is no membership costs as there is no registration, no 'card holding members', everyone comes and goes as they wish without pressure from membership. There are local coordinators who administer the day-to-day mundane details and activities. The only time that money plays a part in Sahaja Yoga is when a person wishes to purchase an audio, video or DVD lecture from the verious talks given by Shri Mataji, or maybe printed materials such as books and brochures, initial costs may be recovered, these are kept to an absolute minimum. Profit is not a big consideration in Sahaja Yoga although money maybe donated for projects such as the home for destitute mothers in India, Buildings for collective meditation meetings etc. This is by voluntary donation as opposed to subscription. |

| Does Sahaja Yoga have a religious aspect? | |||
| Practitioners of Sahaja Yoga respect all the great prophets who have become, after their death, associated with the major religions. We respect all those saints and divine personalities. These great saints and prophets have voiced the essential truths which form a part of the one Tree of Life. If we were to define self improvement based on the sayings of the prophets and saints as a religion then Sahaja Yoga Meditation must be defined as a religion. more |

| How can Sahaja Yoga benefit me? | |||
There are usually two immediate benefits: We feel free from stress and gain a feeling of peace and contentment. Physically, it helps in the prevention of illness. The meditation would help in the relief or possible cure of some illnesses. Mentally and emotionally, it helps one to attain balance. Spiritually one can attain the highest level of awareness and depth of understanding of one's journey to self improvement. Practitioners of Sahaja Yoga have easily given up smoking, drinking alcohol, drug abuse and lead a normal, balanced, enjoyable moral life. |

|||
| Is Sahaja Yoga a CULT? | |||
| I have taken this definition from a Google search "define Cult" this definition could be right and it could be wrong, but we have to have a | |||
| starting point. Most people have their own idea of what is or isn't a cult, the definition depends on our own prejudices and preconditioned. So below I have taken the main headings and I will try to answer them one by one. | |||
| There is nothing exclusive about Sahaja Yoga, the whole belief system is inclusive, the followers of Sahaja Yoga Meditation believe in the | |||
| integration of all the teachings of the major prophets and incarnations that is to say that Mohamed, The Lord Jesus Christ, Lord Krishna | |||
| Loe Tze, Guru Nanak and many others have taken their birth on this earth to push forward the evolution of mankind to a higher spiritual level | |||
| so in Sahaja Yoga there is belief that no one incarnation or prophet is higher or in some way more exclusive than another, it is our firm belief | |||
| that they are all manifestations of the one God, of course they all have their own 'style' depending on the time and place of their birth on | |||
| earth, there has to be colour and variety in the massage but the essence of the message is exactly the same. | |||
| It is quite possible that some members of Sahaja Yoga practice the meditation with 'zeal' however this is not the way forwards. If you look at | |||
| the link on the subtle system you will see that there are three channels, the central channel is the path of our evolution, this is the path of | |||
| the Autonomic nervous system, this is the channel that takes care of all the things that happen spontaneously on a physical level, all the | |||
| things which happen automatically such as the heart beat, breathing, digestion, taste and touch senses, fight or flight responses etc. | |||
| In the chinese system this zeal would probably be called having too much Yang. In Sahaja Yoga we would call a person who is acting | |||
| with too much 'Yang' as a person having too much 'right sided behaviour'. | |||
| The channel on the right side 'coloured yellow' is said to be the channel of action, this is the channel were we 'action' our desires, | |||
| if this channel is out of balance then we can become hectic, we may be working too hard and have a very futuristic outlook, planning out the | |||
| future and in extreme cases living for the future, we could say that this person is acting with too much zeal this would be excessive use of | |||
| the right side, so again, in Sahaja Yoga, this would be an imbalance. | |||
| charismatic leader | |||
| Sahaja Yoga is unorthodox as we are the only inclusive group I am aware of? Like any group there maybe extremist in Sahaja Yoga. | |||
| Sahaja Yoga operates an open door policy, that is, anyone can come to a public meeting, no one is vetted or asked to fill in a registration | |||
| form, we have no membership cards and no certificates of merit, each person is individually responsible for their own progress, of course | |||
| help is provided but there are no tick boxes for those who do or do not meditate, there are isn't a check list or lie detector test taken but | |||
| generally people who do the meditation do improve their physical well-being and their emotional outlook on life. | |||
| Obviously if people are not willing to meditate on a regular basis then they feel no benefit and usually drop out. If people are behaving in | |||
| an immoral way then they would be asked to leave until they have correct their behaviour. I am not aware of any so called | |||
| 'religious' group who would actually ask people to leave if they were behaving in an immoral way. Any bad publicity that Sahaja Yoga has | |||
| attracted on the internet as been a result of those people who have been asked to leave due to immoral behavior. | |||
| incarnations, as above, we have an open door policy and everyone is allowed through that door if they have a desire to change for the | |||
| better then they stay, if not, they leave as they would feel out of step with the rest of the collective. | |||
| A false religion or sect, again if we are a false religion then all the major religions must be false, as I have said above, our aim is to follow | |||
| the words of the prophets and incarnations, we have not added any new prophets or changed the words of any prophet, so we don't really | |||
| sit well in a category of sect or false religion. | |||
