Birmingham’s Perry Park, staged the cultural event known as the Birmingham Carnival on 7 August 2005. The main procession of the Birmingham Carnival takes in the style of a mardi-gras, The procession begins in Handsworth at about midday and moves along a route to Perry Park, where there is variety of different styles music, the food when you get to the park is mostly West Indian but there are number of 'Joes' burger bars too. There were also a few arts and crafts stalls but in the main the park is dominated by ' fun fair' with all kinds of scary rides. The event it would appear is arranged by a variety community organisers whose charities and organisations are reflected on the floats. The carnival has the full support of Birmingham City Council. Each year the event seems to improve, building on the success of previous years. As usual spectators line the procession route to watch people from Birmingham and other areas of the UK dancing in flamboyant costumes, bands and salsa dancers accompanying floats, just about every organisation seems to be represented in some fashion.Cllr Dorothy Wallace (Chair of the Birmingham Carnival Committee) commented ‘Birmingham Carnival is an event that brings all of the city’s communities together to have fun and it also attracts people from all across the UK. Carnival can only happen because people in the community dedicate their time to make it a success.’Cllr John Alden Cabinet Member of Leisure, Sport and Culture added ‘Birmingham City Council is delighted to support this event. Community led events like the Birmingham Carnival help bring the citizens of the city together and reinforce Birmingham as a key tourist destination for incoming visitors.”
